Student Representation

Student Representatives create positive change at Unitec by leading feedback big and small! Getting enough chairs in the classroom, advocating for increased services or even chatting with the CEO are just some of the things Student Representatives get up to. Unitec’s Student Rep system is in place to ensure that students are able to have a say in decision making at Unitec. There are many layers of Student Reps which means that your voice will be heard at all levels, from the classroom to the boardroom.

Class Reps

Classes or programmes at Unitec has the opportunity to elect a Student Rep, and you or anyone in your class can nominate yourself to run in the election. Your lecturer will arrange the election to happen in the first few weeks of classes. You can go to your class rep with concerns, suggestions or any kind of feedback regarding your class. Your class rep is trained to either seek a resolution to the feedback if they can, or to take that feedback to someone who can help. All reps have the support of the Student Rep Coordinator, the Student Issues Advocates and higher levels of Student Reps. Student Reps attend regular meetings with each other and the Student Rep Coordinator to discuss the feedback they are getting from students.

The Student Council
The Student Council is the highest level of Student Representation at Unitec, and is made up of a Student President, a Rep for each faculty, a Maori Rep and a Pacific Rep. The Student Council represents the entire student body to Unitec and to the media. Elections for Student Council positions are held in September each year, and every Unitec student is eligible to vote or run for a position. The members of the Student Council sit on a range of Faculty Academic Committees and Subcommittees. They meet with important decision-makers at Unitec (such as the Senior Leadership Team and Programme Leaders) to discuss student feedback that they have collected from students and student reps.
